Randall David Johnson grew up in Walnut Creek, California and attended Livermore High School prior to becoming a college baseball player at the University of Southern California. There, he was teammates with former MLB slugger Mark McGwire and NFL head coach Jack Del Rio. Small world.
Johnson was drafted in the second round of the 1985 MLB Amateur Draft by the Montreal Expos and made his Major League debut for the club in 1988. During his second season for the Expos, Johnson was traded to the Seattle Mariners, where he'd play his next nine seasons. As a member of the M's, Johnson made five All-Star teams and was a Cy Young award winner in 1995.
In 1998, Johnson was dealt to the Houston Astros and played there for half a season. He then signed with the Diamondbacks in 1999 as a free agent, going on to win four consecutive Cy Young Awards, including the 2001 campaign during which he recorded a career-best 372 strikeouts and won a World Series ring.

After his tremendous stint with the Diamondbacks, Johnson joined the New York Yankees for two seasons from 2005-06, before returning to Arizona in 2007 and 2008. He finished off his MLB career with the San Francisco Giants in 2009 as a 45-year-old.
Throughout his professional baseball career, Johnson became a five-time Cy Young award winner, won the pitching Triple Crown, earned a World Series ring and World Series MVP award, and made 10 All-Star teams. He also infamously threw a fastball over the head of Phillies first baseman John Kruk during the 1993 All-Star Game. Johnson recorded 4,875 career strikeouts and led the league in strikeouts nine times. Additionally, he pitched a perfect game and a no-hitter during his prestigious career.
Johnson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015 and is one of the greatest MLB players in the history of the game.
