Walk-Off Wild Pitch Gifts LSU Incredible SEC Tournament Win

The LSU Tigers headed into Thursday's SEC Tournament coming off the longest game in program history. On Wednesday, head coach Paul Mainieri's squad lost to Mississippi State, 5-4, after 17 innings in the longest game in tournament history. That game ended after six hours and 43 minutes, but LSU didn't have much time to sleep. They were scheduled to play Auburn less than 10 hours later, and if they lost, they were eliminated.

Needing a win to improve their NCAA Tournament resume, No. 5-seed LSU was trailing No. 8-seed Auburn heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. That's when one of the wildest endings to any baseball game you'll ever see took place.

Auburn left-hander Brooks Fuller threw a breaking ball into the dirt that was blocked by catcher Matt Scheffler. As the junior, who started 50 games behind the plate this year, went to retrieve the baseball, he unknowingly kicked it and couldn't find it.

That's when mayhem ensued.

LSU freshman Giovanni DiGiacomo scored from third base while the baseball sat only a few feet away. Then, Auburn first baseman Rankin Woley, who was sliding for the baseball, wildly threw it away from everyone, which allowed LSU's Drew Bianco to come all the way around from second base to score the game-winning run.

The LSU baseball team advances to take on the highest remaining seed left in the tournament's fourth round. Opposite them, the No. 7-seed Ole Miss Rebels also remain, but some heavy hitters are still alive. Vanderbilt (1-seed), Arkansas (2), Georgia (3) and Mississippi State (4) all remain and have yet to lose in the double elimination tournament.

It hasn't been a good year for Auburn losing to LSU in walk-off fashion. During the 2018 college football season, LSU beat Auburn on a game-winning field goal as time expired.

LSU kicker Cole Tracy, who nailed that kick, made sure to remind everyone about it after this baseball game, too.

The SEC Tournament played at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Alabama concludes with the championship game on Sunday.
