There are certain things in life that are impossible to understand. Why did Duquesne's Marquis Brown jump from a 16th-floor dorm window? Why was Celia Barquin Arozamena senselessly murdered on a golf course? Those questions might never be answered, and now there is another serious case involving a Louisville Cardinals football player that is just as head-scratching as it is scary.
Louisville tight end Kemari Averett was arrested earlier this week after police said the 20-year-old sophomore held a gun to his girlfriend's head and threatened to kill her. He pled not guilty Tuesday morning to charges of first-degree wanton endangerment and fourth-degree assault.
The 6-foot-6, 267-pound tight end from Atlanta, Georgia remains in Louisville Metro jail on a $10,000 bond and faces an October 26 hearing. He was immediately suspended from the football team and is banned from all team activities.
According to the arrest citation, via The Associated Press, Averett realized his laptop went missing from a backpack his girlfriend returned after the two had been studying over the weekend.
Although the report states the woman was unaware the laptop was missing, Averett approached her car, put a gun to her temple, and threatened to kill her. Witnesses said Averett pulled her hair while pointing the gun.
Police also referred to Averett as being the father of the woman's baby, but he has denied it.
"Kemari Averett has been suspended immediately from all football activities per further investigation. He will not have access to our facility or be involved in any team activities during this suspension." — Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino
These are definitely some serious charges against Averett, who has eight catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns in 2018, and he will not be playing college football until the investigation into this alleged domestic violence situation is over.
