Jaiden Fields' Walk-Off Chopper Snapped OU's 40-Game Winning Streak

Having the clutch gene gives you a leg up on the competition.

It makes you hungry for crunch time, and the only thing that can satiate it is a winning play.

The gene runs strong in the Fields family.

Jaiden Fields steps up to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth inning against the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

With the game all knotted up at 6-6, the redshirt sophomore outfielder -- the younger sister of former Ohio State and Georgia quarterback Justin Fields -- needed to make something happen.

The clutch gene kicked in, and she chopped the ball in the gap between the third baseman and shortstop to left field. Her teammate Jacqui Switzer -- the runner on second -- kicked into high gear and rounded third toward home plate.

The Sooners outfielder cleanly fielded the ball and heaved it home. The ball reached the catcher to the right of home plate, giving Switzer a clean look. She crossed and Jack Turner Stadium erupted.

The walk-off hit handed OU its first loss of the season and ended its 40-game winning streak.

The Big 12 program's win streak extended back to February 2020 before a majority of the season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19 outbreak. It was the third longest in NCAA history, falling one behind the its own streak set in 2019 and Arizona's all-time mark of 47 set in 1997.

Fields went 3-for-5, but could've given the 21st-ranked Bulldgos that extra run on her second hit. In the fourth inning, she hit a home run that drove in a teammate but was ruled out for missing home plate. She wanted the extra batting practice reps and you have to respect that.

The softball player's football-slinging brother could take note from his younger sister. A projected first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Justin Fields will have plenty of opportunity to show off his clutch gene at the professional level.
