"Murray to Thompson" Sparked TAMU's 1986 SWC Championship Run

The crowd at Kyle Field was nervous heading into the fourth quarter against Baylor in 1986.

The No. 11 Bears held a 10-point advantage, and they were firmly in control.

Texas A&M quarterback Kevin Murray revved up the engine to bring the Aggies within six with under four minutes remaining.

He was four yards away from completing an improbable come-from-behind win. Wide receiver Tony Thompson was in his sights.

The Texas A&M football team was undefeated in Southwest Conference Play heading into the Baylor game. Led by head coach Jackie Sherrill, the Aggies handily took care of Texas Tech and beat Houston 19-7.

Baylor was a whole different animal. Yes, they were bears and not cougars, but they were also a tough-minded team who wanted to go into College Station and prove they belonged at the top of the SWC.

They jumped out to a 17-0 lead early in the game, but their efforts were thwarted by Murray.

The A&M signal caller led a furious comeback and brought his team within a score. He led the offense to Baylor's 4-yard line late in the fourth.

On third-and-goal, Murray dropped back to pass. The Baylor pass rush was all over him. He quickly fired to a crossing Thompson. The ball deflected off the Aggie wideout, but he was able to reach back and snag it before it hit the ground.

The touchdown pass tied the game, and the ensuing extra point sealed Texas A&M's 31-30 win.

Kyle Field went nuts. The college football world went nuts.

Murray finished the game with 308 yards through the air and three touchdown passes. He also ran one in.

The victory is just what the Aggies needed to spark their run to the SWC Championship.

Murray's resilience is what Texas A&M is made of. Thompson's concentration is what wins are made of.
