5-Star Defensive Tackle is 310 Pounds of Pure Force

Five-star college football recruits are always fascinating to follow. They usually have a rare combination of physical skills and football IQ to help them thrive in high school and succeed at the next level.

Five-star defensive tackle Travis Shaw fits the mold of a physically imposing force.

At 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, he is the leader of the defense at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Shaw, the No. 9 overall prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, still has some time before he needs to make a decision, but several big-time programs are starting to make a serious push.

To date, Travis Shaw has received scholarship offers from Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Maryland, Michigan State, NC State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The five-star defensive lineman has started to narrow down his options, including the Clemson Tigers in the ACC and Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten. Shaw also planned to attend UNC's spring game.

The NCAA has imposed a football recruiting dead period until June 1, but after that date, official visits will return for the first time in over a year. It will be interesting to see which schools Shaw ends up visiting over the next few months.

Travis Shaw Highlights

The 247Sports Composite ranks Shaw as the second-best defensive tackle in the entire nation, and his stats prove it.

In 2018, he made his mark with 52 tackles but only registered a single sack. He broke out in a big way in 2019, generating 12 sacks. In his most recent season, he helped bring Grimsley to the playoffs.

For his weight, it's notable how quick Shaw is on his feet. He out-muscles his competition and has a projectable frame, leading scouts to call him a player with NFL Draft potential already.

The race to sign Travis Shaw is already underway. He will help any college defensive line, and when he commits, the school that lands him will have plenty to celebrate.
