Nathan Donald Diaz came from Stockton, California, and attended Tokay High School. Diaz has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He has a brother, Nick Diaz, who also fights professionally in the UFC.

Before earning a contract with the UFC, Diaz was a mixed martial artist in the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) and Strikeforce.

His first UFC fight came in 2007 against Manvel Gamburyan at the Ultimate Fighter 5, a fight he won via submission in the second round. He followed that performance up with four-consecutive UFC Fight Night wins over Junior Assuncao, Alvin Robinson, Kurt Pellegrino, and Josh Neer.

From 2011-12, Diaz beat Takanori Gomi, Cowboy Cerrone, and Jim Miller (at UFC on FOX) to earn a title fight at the lightweight division. He was defeated via unanimous decision after five rounds against Benson Henderson, missing out on his chance to claim the belt.

Following his title bout loss, Diaz earned his next win against Gray Maynard, winning by TKO in the first round.

However, Diaz shot to stardom in 2016 when he dominated Conor McGregor at UFC 196. He took down the Irishman in a welterweight bout via submission in the second round.

The rivalry which ensued between the two MMA fighters will go down in UFC history, as the pair were constantly taking shots at one another on social media.

The two were the main event during their rematch at UFC 202. During the highly successful PPV event, Diaz was upended by McGregor via majority decision.

His most recent fights came in 2019 when he took down Anthony Pettis on the main card at UFC 241 ahead of the coveted matchup between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic.

Jorge Masvidal then defeated him via TKO in the third round at UFC 244 during a fight for the "BMF" belt.

Throughout his UFC career, Diaz has won Submission of the Night five times, earned the Fight of the Night bonus eight times, and the Performance of the Night and Knockout of the Night once each.
