Basketball Hoop Crashes Down From Ceiling After Dunk

Hanging on the rim is never a good idea. Shaquille O'Neal has shattered so many backboards and broken off so many rims throughout his career that he owns a "broken rim tree" sculpture. Shaq Diesel still probably has tiny shards of glass lodged in his head.

For some players, "bringing down the house" on a monster slam dunk is more literal than they would prefer. Dunking can be dangerous if a dude hangs from the hoop like a deer weighing down a helicopter.

Let this serve as a reminder to just opt for the simple lay-up.

That's Keshawn Murphy dunking. Keshawn Murphy is a 6-foot-10, 225-pound player for Ramsay High School in Birmingham, Alabama. He's also heading to Mississippi State to play college basketball, probably because of the sheer power he possesses.

Murphy was on the receiving end of an alley-oop and slammed it for the dunk in a game against Carver High School on Friday night. He hangs on the rim for a few seconds before all hell breaks loose on the court. The entire basketball hoop, including the rim, backboard and the metal structure holding it to the ceiling, collapses and falls on to the court.

Players then narrowly evade what could have been serious injury. Seriously, this looks like something out of the movie Final Destination. That thing could have sent some dudes flying across the court. Who the heck designed that hoop?

As for the game, I'm not sure what you do from there. They can't continue playing because, well, the hoop is on the floor. The two teams are reportedly playing the final few minutes on a different day following this bizarre "goal malfunction."

Hanging on the rim can have serious consequences.

In 2016, a 16-year-old died in Ohio after sustaining injuries from a hoop falling on him. In 2018, a 14-year-old in Indiana died when his at-home hoop fell on him. Back in 2013, four fans were injured when a basketball hoop came crashing down at a game.

You won't catch me ever hanging on a rim (because I can't even jump that high). Hopefully kids will learn from videos like this one.
